Hi everyone!
Opening: Please show Ms. Aughey completed ENSCI Environmental Science powerpoint slides 1-12.
We have been discussing the population growth of humans and the factors that have led humans being able to inhabit almost all biomes: These growth factors include technology advances; as well as, progress in agriculture, transportation, construction engineering and medicine.
However, the progress of man has come with price to the environment. One such impact has been the the bioaccumulation and bioconcentration of chemicals that are distributed in the environment through absorption, difussion, and osmosis. Wildlife such as birds and mammals have suffered from poisons becoming magnified in their tissues and organs. These accumulations in turn, affect the reproductive strategy of these species. One chemical known as DDT was banned in 1972 due to the thinning of eggshells because DDT affected the way enzymes deposited the calcium in the shell. Osprey, comorants, bluebirds and seagulls were affected by DDT.
Work Session: SWBAT:
- Review tutiorals and animations on Difussion and Osmosis.
- Then, you will read through the procedure of a osmosis lab using potatoes. Thursday and Friday we will be conducting this experiment.
- Furthermore, you will reviewing lab safety procedures
- Complete your Scientific America DDT article (for homework, if not completeed in classes)
