Writing for Assessment: Bravery in the Face of Danger:Characters in literature often display intense courage when they face a difficult or dangerous situation. Choose a character from a work of literature you have recently read. Summarize the situation in which the character demonstrates bravery and explain how the character's courage helped resolve the problem that he or she faced.

You will finish filling out the Outline Frame we worked on Friday November 21st. Then you type the essay on Microsoft Word and spell and grammar check it. Then you submit the essay.

On Tuesday/Wednesday-We will finish reading "The Things They Carried" and viewing clips of TV-14 (edited) Platoon.

 

On Thursday---There will be an EOCT-style test based on 2 passages and 1 poem from the themes of "The Things They Carried.

 

 

AP English Language and Composition/Week of Dec 1-5

Over the course of the next three Mondays, we will gather sources.

You will pick a topic where you will find 30 sources. I intend for those enrolled in other Advance Placement courses to select a topic that can be used in multi-courses.

You will find sources where you can read and form an argument about your topic.

You will find:

• Ten articles (of scholarly or literary merit)
• Five video sources (films, documentaries, youtube, google video, CNN, etc.)
• Five audio/transcript sources (NPR, CNN, PBS, podcasts…)
• Five photograph stills (photographs, paintings, etc)
• Five numeric graphics (tables, pie charts, visual maps, etc.)

We will collect these sources before the Holiday Break!

This week we will be reading the writings of the George Orwell.

On Tues/Wed: We will read "The Hanging"/ create a SOAPS/DIDL organizer and view clips

On Thu/Fri: We will prep for and write a timed-write based on a Neil Postman passage about George Orwell.

AP English Language and Composition Week of Nov 17-21

This week we will have the Persepolis Performance-see previous post for dates and grading policy.

Also, we will read an essay "Two Ways to Belong in America" by  Bharati Mukherjee (w/ AP style multiple choice questions) and a passage from "A Vindication of the Rights of Woman" by Mary Wollstonecraft (w/ AP style multiple choice questions).

This week we will

(Tues, Wed, Thur) present Hurricane Katrina PowerPoints

(Thurs) Write a draft for an on-line essay: Bravery in the Face of Courage

(Tues-Fri) Read a short-story by Tim O'Brien "The Things They Carried" which will be compared with a TV-14 version of Oliver Stone's film "Platoon".

We will be reading selected chapters from Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis.

You will choose groups of 5 to 6 people. On the date next to the name of your assigned chapter,

you will perform a 1 to 3 minute skit/performanced based on your reading of the chapter. You should have the following for your presentation:

Monday Nov. 10 American Lit Honors Research Unit

The Research Unit

We will begin studying issues surrounding the government’s response to the Hurricane Katrina tragedy on the Gulf Coast--------------

I will begin teaching the research process Monday in the computer lab.

This week we will listen to an interview on NPR with Spike Lee

As the week goes on, we will view and discuss clips from his documentary When The Levees Broke.

Overview: The American Lit Honors classes will collaborate as small groups of 3-6 to create a research based PowerPoint.

 

We will be creating PowerPoint.

1. Every group will have a cover slide and a work cited slide then you will have a slide for every member in the group. You can collaborate on all the slides but if there are 6 members in your group—these means the body of your presentation has 6 slides minimum.

2. Pick a member if the group to host the PowerPoint on their student account

2- The victims and survivors of Hurricane Katrina (for Wed. Nov 18th)

3- The government response and bureauracy of this natural disaster (for Wed. Nov 18th)

4- The destruction and rebuilding of New Orleans and areas affected by the disaster (for Thur Wed 19)

5- The history and culture of New Orleans before and after the storm (for Thur Wed 19)

 

 

The Structure of the Powerpoint

 

Slide 1-A title page that lists the members of the PowerPoint group.

 

Slide 2-The thesis statement that states the subject and argument that your PowerPoint is making.

 

Subsequent Slides-The content of your presentation will be supported with quotes, commentary, analysis, facts, figures, voice, song lyrics, audio clips, charts or graphs. All researched information and photographs must be parenthetically noted so as to list on your work cited page. You must use the Citation Machine to make your Works Cited page.

I will take off a letter grade off your project if your information isn't cited correclty.
