AP English Language and Composition/Week of Jan 27-30

Today/Wednesday:

I will check for the first three assignments on the Research Paper checklist. Then, I will demonstrate again how to take notes on the 4" x 6" notecards. The 60 notecards are due next Monday.

Then we we read/listen to the first 20 minutes of a debate on Immigration. Then, as class, we will debate the text and the issue. To view the entire debate go to:

About the panelists:

Henry Cisneros is chairman of American CityVista, a company that describes itself as "dedicated to producing workforce homes in America's urban areas". Cisneros served in the Clinton Administration as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development and is also a former mayor of San Antonio, Texas.

Dr. Michael Eric Dyson is the Avalon Foundation Professor in the Humanities at the University of Pennsylvania. He has written several books including "Is Bill Cosby Right? Or Has the Black Middle Class Lost its Mind?" He is also an ordained minister.

Archbishop Jose H. Gomez is the Archbishop of San Antonio, Texas. He has been named by Time magazine as one of the top 25 most influential Hispanics in America.

Macarena Hernandez is an editorial columnist at The Dallas Morning News. Her family emigrated from Mexico to the U.S. in the early 1970s.

D.A. King is founder of The Dustin Inman Society, which aims to educate the people of Georgia on the consequences of illegal immigration. He is a regular contributor to the Marietta Daily Journal.

Richard Langlois is a criminal defense attorney and chairman of the Bexar County Republican party in Texas.

Lee Teran is a clinical professor of law, specializing in immigration and nationality law at St. Mary's University in San Antonio, Texas.

Thursday/Friday- A double timed write. One essay will be a style-analysis of a passage. The other essay will be an argument.

We will read and discuss the poems "The Heart of Hunger" by Martin Espada and "Meeting the Animal in Washington Square Park" by Luis Rodriguez

On Thursday we will prepare to write on essay on an AP-style prompt that contrasts Mexico with California. It is written by Richard Rodriguez.

On Friday we will read an excerpt of Henry David Thoreau's "On Civil Disobedience" and view clips on Martin Luther King and Mohatma Gandhi.

We will be in the computer lab today. We will be drafting an essay on to Microsoft Word where we will spell, grammar, and style check the draft. Then we will paste the essay on to the text on-line grader.

AP English Language and Composition/Week of Jan. 20-23

 This week you are working on gathering your 30 sources for the research paper. The first three assignments off the checklist are due next Monday January 26, 2009. This week I will teach how to take notes on your 4 x 6 inch notecards.

You will need 60 notecards:

• Ten for each of the evidence 1,2,3 body paragraphs (30 cards).

• Ten for the counterargument.

• Ten for analysis of photographs/art.

• ten for graphic/timeline etc.

You will mix paraphrase and direct quotation cards.

3. On Thursday is the discussion based on your reading of David McCullough's "John Adams and Thomas Jefferson." Remember there is a Rhetorical precis connected with this piece.
